Gangnam District

Gangnam District

Gangnam District

·

Gangnam, "south of the river," concentrates office towers, luxury shopping, Bongeunsa temple and royal tombs in the heart of Seoul.

Gangnam, whose name literally means "south of the river," is a district of Seoul situated along the Han River. This district is home to corporate headquarters, high-end shopping centers, cosmetic surgery clinics, and discrete Buddhist heritage nestled among glass towers. The single "Gangnam Style" by South Korean artist Psy, released in 2012, directly references the lifestyle associated with this neighborhood.

Why visit Gangnam

Gangnam offers a snapshot of contemporary Seoul: soaring architecture, international brands, vibrant nightlife, and K-pop culture. It's also a neighborhood of contrasts, where a Buddhist temple over a thousand years old sits alongside a sprawling underground shopping complex spanning several hectares. Three main reasons to spend half a day to a full day here:

  • Understand South Korea's economic dynamics by exploring the business district.
  • Shop or window-shop on the luxury brand streets of Apgujeong and Cheongdam.
  • Visit Bongeunsa temple and the royal tombs in Seonjeongneung park, two heritage sites immersed in the urban landscape.

What to see and do in Gangnam

Teheran Boulevard (Teheran-ro)

This avenue is the heart of the business district. It is home to the headquarters and regional offices of Google, IBM, Samsung, and numerous South Korean technology companies. In the immediate vicinity, the Samsung D'light showroom allows you to test for free the latest consumer and professional technologies from the group.

Apgujeong and Cheongdam

These two neighboring districts house boutiques of high-end fashion and Korean designers, as well as a notable concentration of cosmetic surgery clinics. Apgujeong Rodeo Street and Cheongdam Avenue, popularized by the television series Cheongdam-dong Alice, are the most frequented thoroughfares for shopping and café spotting.

Bongeunsa Temple

Founded in the 8th century, this Buddhist temple is located in the heart of Gangnam, facing the COEX. It welcomes visitors during the day and offers a templestay program allowing you to spend a night on site, participate in tea ceremony and meditation with monks. If the monastic experience interests you, you can extend it elsewhere in the country at Magoksa temple or Haeinsa temple.

Seonjeongneung Park (Samneung)

This UNESCO World Heritage cemetery park shelters three royal tombs from the Joseon dynasty: those of King Seongjong, his consort Queen Jeonghyeon, and King Jungjong. The burial mounds surrounded by stone statues and pine trees form a green space valued by residents for walking.

COEX Mall

Located beneath the Korea World Trade Center, COEX is one of South Korea's largest underground shopping complexes. It features several hundred shops, an aquarium, a Kimchi museum, movie theaters, and the Starfield Library, a multi-level open library that has become a highly frequented photo destination.

Seoul Olympic Park

East of Gangnam, the park built for the 1988 Games alternates lawns, contemporary sculptures, and sports facilities. Useful for catching your breath mid-day away from the traffic.

Practical information

  • Duration: allow half a day for an overview, a full day if you combine Bongeunsa, COEX, and shopping in Apgujeong.
  • Budget: dining and shopping are more expensive here than elsewhere in Seoul; public transport and heritage site entry remain affordable.
  • Languages: English is understood in most shops and hotels in the district.
  • Wi-Fi: extensive public coverage in shopping centers and metro stations.

When to visit

Gangnam can be visited year-round, but the experience varies by season:

  • Spring (April-May) and autumn (October-November): most pleasant conditions for walking between outdoor sites (Bongeunsa, Seonjeongneung, Olympic Park).
  • Summer: humid heat; COEX's underground galleries are a air-conditioned alternative.
  • Winter: year-end illuminations particularly striking around COEX and Cheongdam.

For nightlife, Friday and Saturday evenings concentrate most activity in bars and clubs around Gangnam station.

How to get there

The district is very well served by Seoul's metro:

  • Line 2 (green): Gangnam station, main entry point to Teheran Boulevard.
  • Line 9: Sinnonhyeon and Eonju stations for Apgujeong and Cheongdam.
  • Line 7: Cheongdam station.
  • Bundang Line: Apgujeong Rodeo and Seolleung stations for Seonjeongneung Park.

From Incheon International Airport, allow approximately 1 hour by direct shuttle bus or via AREX line then metro transfer.

Nearby

Once Gangnam is explored, several stops naturally extend your journey through South Korea:

  • Seoul north of the river: Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon district, Myeongdong market.
  • Seokguram and the heritage of Gyeongju, ancient capital of the Silla kingdom.
  • Sea Life Busan on the southeast coast, accessible by KTX in about 2.5 hours.
  • Jungmun Saekdal Beach on Jeju Island, to extend your stay by the sea.
