Located at the southern tip of the peninsula, Busan is South Korea's second-largest city. It is home to one of the world's largest ports. Yet Busan is far more than a simple port city. Blending urban energy, culture, gastronomy, temples and mountainous landscapes, Busan is brimming with treasures to discover. Here are the must-see attractions for a 3-day stay in Busan.

1. Visit Haedong Yonggungsa Temple

3 days in Busan: must-see attractions not to miss

Picture a pagoda perched on rocks overlooking the Sea of Japan. That's what the Haedong Yonggungsa Temple looks like. It's one of the rare temples situated by the sea, as Korean temples are typically hidden deep in forests and mountains. Built in 1376 during the Goryeo dynasty, this pagoda is renowned for granting the wishes of those who pray within its walls. You'll see numerous Buddha statues as well as the main sanctuary of Daeung-jeon with the Haesu Gwaneum Daebul statue, the Buddhist goddess of the sea.

After visiting the temple, don't miss exploring the hiking trails in the area to admire the sea from the rocks. And for sunset lovers, the Haedong Yonggungsa Temple is a favorite spot among Koreans and tourists, especially during the Lunar New Year, to witness this natural spectacle!

2. Explore the Fish Market

Head to the Nampo-Dong district for a glimpse of local life. Indeed, this essential Busan neighborhood is in many ways the symbol of the city's identity. Here you'll find one of South Korea's largest markets. With a beautiful view of the harbor, the Jagalchi Fish Market reflects the importance of Busan's port activity. The more adventurous can try some unique dishes like sea penis (gaebul).

If fish isn't your cup of tea, you'll find plenty of street food stalls throughout the Nampo-Dong district, particularly at BIFF Square. Take advantage to discover the city's cultural center, where the Busan International Film Festival takes place, Asia's most important festival.

3. Wander Through Gamcheon Village's Colorful Alleys

Originally, Gamcheon village was a slum built to house Korean War refugees. In 2019, through an initiative by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the village underwent a dramatic transformation with the project "Dreaming of Machu Picchu in Busan". The idea? Turn this village into an artistic and creative zone. All the houses were painted in bright, cheerful colors and numerous street art creations adorn the village's walls and staircases.

Once impoverished, Gamcheon village now attracts countless tourists from around the world to admire this hillside of colorful homes. One thing is certain: it's a must-visit during a stay in Busan!

4. Relax on Haeundae and Gwangalli Beaches

Haeundae and Gwangalli. These are Busan's most renowned beaches. The first is the country's largest beach and is located in a lively neighborhood of the same name. Generally, many festivities and entertainment are organized along the beach in summer. The second is famous for its view of the Gwangdan Bridge, a 7km suspension bridge connecting two districts in southern Busan, which illuminates once darkness falls (hence its nickname, the Diamond Bridge)! If you're seeking more tranquility and serenity, the Songjeons and Songdo beaches are perfect for a relaxing escape away from the hustle and bustle!

5. Discover Beomeosa Temple Through a Templestay Experience!

We conclude our selection of Busan's essential visits with, once again, a temple. But this is no ordinary one! Beomeosa Temple is one of Korea's largest. Located in the heights of Geumjeongsan Mountain, it was built in 678 by the monk Uisang during the Silla kingdom. It comprises several pagodas, sanctuaries and chapels and houses historical and religious treasures such as the Iljumun Gate and a three-tiered stone pagoda.

And if you're feeling adventurous, you can even spend a day and night there with the Templestay program! Buddhist monks will guide you to learn about temple life. Meditation, prostrations, chanting, tea ceremony… all part of the experience!
