Connected to Yeosu by a bridge and cable car, Dolsando brings together hermitages, secluded beaches, and seafood restaurants among South Korea's most renowned.

South Korea's seventh-largest island, Dolsando is a charming island town situated south of the Yeosu peninsula. It is renowned for its picturesque landscapes, numerous tourist sites, and mild climate.

Offering delightful walks through dreamlike scenery, Dolsando is a destination to prioritize for unforgettable moments during your trip to South Korea.

History

Dolsando is one of many islands that make up the Yeosu peninsula. It is connected to the peninsula by the Dolsan Bridge. This 450-meter structure was completed in 1984 and has since become a major tourist attraction in its own right. Aside from maritime routes, it was the only access to the island. However, in 2013, a cable car linking the island to the Yeosu peninsula was installed by the Poma group (a French company specializing in transport systems).

Beyond facilitating access to the island, this cable transport passes through two unmissable tourist sites: Jasan Park and Dolsan Park. The former, located in Yeosu city, is renowned for offering the best views over the sea and port. It also houses a memorial to national hero Admiral Yi Sun-sin. Dolsan Park, meanwhile, offers magnificent sunsets and sweeping views of the Dolsan Bridge, especially at nightfall.

Today

Dolsando island is brimming with tourist and historical sites that captivate visitors. Beyond Jasan Park and Dolsan Park, which we mentioned earlier, you'll also find a martial arts military site, Hyangiram Hermitage and Eunjeogam Hermitage, the general pavilion of Jeollanam-do SuShan, the beaches of Bangjukpo, Hyangilam, and Silver Rock, along with countless other equally beautiful sites. Moreover, it is relatively easy to tour the island via a charming, fully paved coastal road.

Just below the Dolsan Bridge, you can admire a full-scale replica of a Geobukseon, the famous turtle ship that enabled Koreans to win the war during the Imjin War between 1592 and 1598. Nearby, you'll find numerous seafood restaurants where you can enjoy various dishes to enhance your visit.

Climate

Thanks to its proximity to the sea, Dolsando enjoys a very pleasant climate compared to other South Korean destinations. The best time to visit the island is during summer, when the average temperature hovers around 26°C.
