Lotte World
Lotte World
An iconic amusement park in Seoul, Lotte World combines a vast indoor zone beneath a glass canopy and an outdoor site on Lake Seokchon, open year-round.
Lotte World is one of South Korea's premier amusement parks, located in the Jamsil district, southeast of Seoul. Its defining feature: an indoor section covered by a massive glass canopy (Adventure) and an outdoor section on a lake (Magic Island), allowing visitors to enjoy the park year-round regardless of weather.
Why visit Lotte World
The park combines four themed zones on a single site and features around forty attractions, ranging from family-friendly rides to adrenaline-pumping roller coasters. Its half-covered, half-open-air layout sets it apart from Everland or Seoul Land, the two other major parks in the Seoul metropolitan area. Direct subway access from downtown makes it an easy outing to fit into your itinerary, especially when traveling with children or teenagers.
History of the park
The Lotte World project was launched by the Lotte Group with its creation announced in 1986. Construction began in 1984 and culminated in the official opening in 1989. The park surpassed 100 million cumulative visitors in 2007. In 2011, it welcomed 7.58 million visitors annually, ranking it 11th globally among the world's most-visited amusement parks. It has gradually expanded with additional attractions to become, alongside Everland and Seoul Land, one of the capital's premier entertainment destinations.
What to see and do
The four themed zones
- Adventure: the indoor section beneath a glass canopy, housing most of the rides and shops.
- Magic Island: the outdoor zone on Lake Seokchon, recognizable by its castle.
- Kidzone: an area dedicated to young children, featuring gentle attractions.
- Underworld B1: the lower level, home to themed attractions.
Thrill rides
The park boasts three roller coasters (launched, spinning, and traditional) plus several intense attractions:
- Atlantis Adventure: a roller coaster themed around sunken Atlantis.
- Gyro Drop: a free-fall tower.
- Gyro Swing: a giant pendulum combining swinging and spinning motions.
- Conquistador: a large swinging ship.
- Bungee Drop: a 38-meter drop tower reaching speeds of 90 km/h.
Water attractions and family rides
For water enthusiasts, Flume Ride offers a log-flume descent with Jurassic theming, while Jungle Adventure features a whitewater river ride in tubes. The park rounds out its offerings with scenic walkways, swinging chairs, carousels, paddle boats on the lake, and dynamic cinema experiences.
Shows and parades
The World Carnival Parade, presented three times daily, winds through Adventure with costumed characters and dancers. Additional entertainment includes puppet shows, live concerts, illusionism acts, and evening light-and-sound shows on Magic Island.
Practical information
The park is open daily, generally from late morning until early or late evening depending on season and day of the week (extended hours on weekends). Check the official calendar before visiting, as certain public holidays may alter hours.
Several ticket options are available: park entry alone, combined park and Lotte Folk Museum entry, and an annual Premium Pass. Budget moderately for standard adult admission, with reduced rates in late afternoon ("after 4") and for children. Tickets purchased online through the official website or Korean tourism platforms are often cheaper than gate prices.
Plan a full day to explore both zones and enjoy at least one show. A half-day (4 to 5 hours) suffices if you're focusing only on top attractions.
When to visit
Since much of Lotte World is indoors, it's visitable year-round. Korea's cold, dry winters remain comfortable in Adventure; summer, though air-conditioned indoors, can feel oppressive at Magic Island. If possible, avoid weekends, Korean public holidays, and school holidays (late July–August, early January), when wait times on popular attractions can exceed an hour. Weekday late afternoons typically offer the best balance between crowds and operating hours.
How to get there
The park is directly connected to Jamsil Station on Line 2 (Exit 4), roughly a 10-minute walk from downtown via subway. The station is also served by Line 8. Numerous city buses, Incheon Airport buses, and express buses also stop nearby; check which lines are operating at the time of your visit, as the network changes regularly.
What to see nearby
Once your visit concludes, the Jamsil district offers several worthwhile extensions: Lotte World Tower (555 m, among the world's tallest skyscrapers) and its Seoul Sky observation deck, Lotte World Mall shopping center, and Lake Seokchon, which is especially lovely during cherry blossom season. To explore other facets of the capital, you can continue to the traditional alleyways of Insa-dong, the international neighborhood of Itaewon, or the grand plaza of Gwanghwamun.

Frequently asked questions
A full day allows you to experience Adventure, Magic Island, and at least one show. If you're targeting only a few top attractions, a half-day (4 to 5 hours) will suffice.
Both. Adventure, Kidzone, and Underworld B1 are covered by a glass canopy, while Magic Island is open-air on Lake Seokchon. The park is therefore enjoyable even in poor weather.
Yes. Kidzone and several family-friendly rides in Adventure are designed for younger visitors. Thrill rides are concentrated elsewhere, making it easy to manage mixed-age groups.
Visit on a weekday outside school holidays, arrive at opening time, and consider a Magic Pass (priority queue access) for high-traffic attractions like Atlantis Adventure or Gyro Drop.
The simplest way is by subway: exit at Jamsil Station (Line 2 or Line 8), Exit 4. The park is accessible on foot in about 10 minutes via an underground passage.
