Located in the heart of South Jeolla Province, Gangjin is a destination that is both enriching and surprisingly distinctive. It is renowned for its pottery with inlaid patterns, known as celadon. Easily accessible, this town welcomes you with its breathtaking landscapes and numerous historical and cultural sites to offer you an unforgettable stay in the land of the morning calm.

A Bit of History

Gangjin, whose name means "pleasant transshipment port," is a town that emerged in the 15th century. It is known for its production of inlaid-pattern pottery, celadon. Indeed, the town benefits from soil rich in clay and silica, the two main components for manufacturing these ceramics. Making the most of its geographical position, Gangjin experienced rapid growth by exporting its products to neighboring nations such as China, Japan, and even Arabia.

As for celadon, this art was born at the end of the Goryeo period and became a true symbol of this Dynasty. Its manufacture requires a special technique. First, the patterns must be carved into the clay. Next, the empty parts must be filled with white clay. The following step involves firing the pottery, and finally, applying a lacquer to it. The artisans of this marvel are so skillful with their hands that the patterns on the pottery appear to be painted rather than inlaid. It is also worth noting that Gangjin has over 180 pottery kilns, which represents nearly half of all kilns in the entire country.

Gangjin Today

Beyond the celadon that built its reputation, Gangjin is home to numerous tourist and cultural sites, the most famous and visited of which is Dasan Chodang. This is where Jeong Yak-yong (a celebrated writer) took refuge during his exile. Known by the pen name "Dasan," Jeong Yak-yong was an eminent man of letters and an emblematic figure in the country. He became famous through his dedication to promoting practical education.

Just as interesting as Dasan Chodang, the Baekryunsa temple, the Muwisa temple, and the house of poet Yeongnam also deserve a visit. Not to mention the Celadon Museum, which is the only museum dedicated to Goryeo celadon in the entire country. You will find numerous items illustrating the evolution of these masterpieces.

For those who wish to venture away from the city and enjoy nature, they can discover the Chulleong-Dari or the trembling bridge. This suspension bridge connecting Gaudo Island to the mainland is off-limits to all motorized vehicles, thus offering a pleasant setting and an atmosphere where calm and tranquility reign. Moreover, it offers a breathtaking view of the sea and the city in the distance.
