Danyang
At the gateway to Sobaeksan, Danyang unveils its 8 wonders, the Gosu Cave, and a breathtaking skywalk suspended above the Namhan River. A complete guide to planning your stopover.
Danyang is a small town situated on the banks of the Namhan River, in North Chungcheong Province, South Korea. It is renowned for its 8 wonders—places of such rare beauty that they have long served as a source of inspiration for the country's poets and writers. Once overlooked by tourism routes due to its remote location, Danyang has become an essential stop on any South Korea itinerary thanks to the highway that now connects it directly to Seoul.
A Glimpse into History
The original town of Danyang, known as Gu Danyang or "Old Danyang," was situated on the shores of Lake Chungju. However, when the dam was constructed, the town was partially submerged, forcing residents to relocate. Thus, the present-day city, known as Sin Danyang or "New Danyang," is located a few kilometers to the north, at the entrance to Sobaeksan National Park.
A legend surrounding Danyang tells of a couple who once lived in the region. Their life was almost a fairytale, except for one thing—they could not have children. Wishing to ensure his lineage, the husband decided to take a "cheop" (mistress in Korean). Once the child was born, the mistress began to mistreat the wife. The Gods, disapproving of this situation, decided to turn them into stone.
Today, if you pass through the region, you will have the opportunity to admire the three rocks that are at the origin of this legend. At the center, the most imposing bears the name Janggunbong, which means "the husband's rock." To its left stands Cheopbong, or "the mistress's rock," and to its right, slightly apart, rises Cheobong, or "the wife's rock."
Danyang Today
While Danyang was once somewhat overlooked by tourism circuits due to its remote location and lack of accommodation for visitors, it has become an essential stop on any South Korea journey thanks to the highway that now connects it directly to Seoul.
Danyang is celebrated for its "8 wonders"—places of such beauty that they have always served as a source of inspiration for the country's most renowned poets and writers. Since they are fairly spread out, it is possible to organize a small circuit to visit them. These wonders are:
Gudambong and Oksunbong are cliffs overlooking the lake.
Sangseon-am, Jungseon-am, and Haseon-am—three rock formations along a charming stream in a valley of Woraksan (south of Danyang, via Route 575).
Sain-am, a cliff along the stream, located 4 km east of Jungseon-am via Route 708.
Northeast of Danyang, 3 km across the lake, the three peaks of Dodamsambong stand out from the rest. The rocks offer both a breathtaking spectacle and a singular atmosphere. Around the three peaks, a musical fountain was created in 1998. The location allows visitors to relax while contemplating the harmonious flow of the cascade and listening to music.
Climate
Danyang enjoys a humid continental climate with dry winters. The average temperature in the region is 12.3°C.
